Brain Boosting Coffee

Since the birth of fat-friendly diets such as the Ketogenic Diet, numerous recipes have popped up that incorporate the tasty dishes and drinks that center around a “healthy fats for energy” mindset.  Known by names such as Bulletproof Coffee®, Butter Coffee, or Keto-Proof Coffee is a new spin on an old favorite with proven health benefits from improved brain function to long lasting energy and enhanced physical performance.

This brain boosting coffee recipe consists of coffee, butter, and oil.  Every single one of these ingredients plays an important role in the beverage, including how it’s prepared!

I’m going to start with the oil.  Depending on who you ask, you’ll get a different answer as to which oil to use.  The most commonly used oil is coconut oil.  However, Dave Asprey, the creator of the Bulletproof Diet®, is entrenched on his recommendation of using Brain Octane Oil.  Ok wait – the difference between our known and beloved coconut oil and something called “brain octane oil” sounds mildly terrifying.  But in reality, they possess the same benefits – just in different (and substantial) amounts.  Coconut oil embodies many impressive health benefits, most importantly: hormone balance, Alzheimer’s treatment, heart disease and high blood pressure prevention, reducing inflammation and arthritis, improving type 2 diabetes, and improved memory and brain function.  Where does coconut oil get all these benefits?  It’s possession of healthy medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs.)  Which brings us to the aforementioned Brain Octane Oil; it’s an oil like MCT oil that’s praised to be of the highest quality.  MCT oil is medium-chain triglycerides, another form of medium-chain fatty acids like the ones found in coconut oil that can also be used in your coffee.  In fact, it’s recommended to use in place of coconut oil.  Brain Octane Oil is distilled from 100% pure coconut oil – it’s like using a strong, concentrated, super-boosted form of coconut oil.

Ok, that was a lot of “oil info.”  In conclusion, the fatty acids found in the oils above contribute to the brain health, long lasting energy, and fat burning qualities of Keto-Proof Coffee.

Next up – the butter.  Butter in coffee…sounds weird.  Butter has gotten a bad rap as a condiment that’s unhealthy and fattening; however, it’s just the opposite.  I’m talking about grass-fed butter.  The cows that produce this butter are healthier than factory-farmed or grain-fed cows and their quality of butter reflects that.  Grass-fed butter is one of those healthy fats that will boost brain function, balance hormones, and provide long-lasting energy!  It’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, D, E, and K – good for digestion and brain health.  I recommend Kerrygold Unsalted Grass-Fed Butter.  The butter ups the nutrients in your coffee and gives it it’s deliciously creamy consistency.  Can’t do lactose?  Opt for ghee.

And last, but certainly not least, the coffee.  Just the word “coffee” invokes feelings of happiness and bliss amid humans young and old.  The type of coffee you use in your will effect your overall experience.  Coffee packs a plethora of benefits, including antioxidants and essential nutrients such as  potassium, manganese, and B vitamins.  Just like food, the type of coffee you chose matters.  Go for coffee that is rainforest certified, small batch, from high elevations and/or Arabica beans.  Another factor that’ll effect your coffee is the way it’s brewed!  The Bulletproof Blog® suggests using a french press, to preserve coffee bean oils that using a filter can remove.  But wait – there’s more!  Not a huge fan of coffee?  You can also make this recipe with hot tea or hot chocolate!

Ready to make this brain boosting coffee?!  Combine your cup of fresh brewed coffee with 1 to 2 tablespoons of grass-fed butter and 1 to 2 tablespoons of the oil of your choice and blend!  Now when I say blend, I mean blend.  Mix it in your blender or Ninja for about 20 to 30 seconds until it looks like a creamy, foamy latte.  Why?  Mixing it this way will actually combine the ingredients compared to just “stirring” them together where your oil and butter will just float on the top.  No blender handy?  Pour the ingredients into a bottle (make sure the lid is on tight) and shake.

Include this coffee recipe in your healthy lifestyle to experience:

  • Long lasting energy
  • Fat burn
  • Improved mental clarity and brain function
  • Enhanced physical performance in fitness
  • Suppressed hunger

Drink up in the mornings for “boosted” day!
